Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute

Whether you're a young athlete, an active adult or a weekend warrior, injuries occur when you least expect them. You may have been injured doing an activity you love, such as running, dancing or skiing. Or maybe your injury was caused by a chronic condition such as osteoarthritis.

At the UCSF Health Saint Francis Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute, we are here to help. From orthopedic evaluation and surgery to acute rehabilitation and outpatient physical therapy, our expert orthopedic doctors and sports medicine specialists provide a tailored treatment plan to get your back on your feet, quickly and safely. For your convenience, we also offer diagnostic radiology and outpatient physical therapy services onsite.

We have offices in both San Francisco and Walnut Creek.

Our Providers

The Saint Francis Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute includes specialists in orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, podiatry, physiatry, dance medicine/Pilates and physical therapy.

  • Orthopedic Surgeons are skilled in both surgical and non-surgical treatments, offering a full range of arthroscopic procedures and joint reconstructions.
  • Sports Medicine Physicians are trained to address the unique needs of athletes. They examine, evaluate and treat a wide variety of sports and activity-related injuries and musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Podiatrists evaluate foot and ankle problems in patients of all ages and provide both surgical and non-surgical treatments, including customized orthotics.
  • Physiatrists use diagnostic techniques such as electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies to diagnose and provide expertise on rehabilitation regimens, as well as procedures such as spinal injections and nerve blocks.

Our Services

Through the Saint Francis Center for Sports Medicine, patients have access to services such as:

  • Treatment for joint-related injuries and conditions
  • Podiatry evaluation, assessment and treatment
  • Physical therapy
  • Orthopedic surgical options
  • Dance medicine assessment and treatment

  • Pilates conditioning and rehabilitation

We also offer baseline testing, which is typically performed before an individual participates in a new activity. Baseline testing involves computerized assessments that measure reaction time, memory capacity, speed of mental processing and executive functioning of the brain. If an injury occurs, having an estimate of the individual's functioning beforehand helps healthcare providers determine the extent of the injury and create an appropriate treatment plan.
