UCSF Health St. Mary's Hospital offers comprehensive breast imaging capabilities in San Francisco and is proud to offer mammogram screenings utilizing next-generation tomosynthesis (3D mammography) technology.
Using breakthrough three-dimensional imaging technology, tomosynthesis offers more accuracy than a standard mammogram. A tomosynthesis mammogram is a fast, FDA-approved exam in which the breast is positioned the same way as in a conventional mammogram.
Benefits Of Tomosynthesis
The benefits of tomosynthesis include:
- Earlier detection of small cancers - a factor that dramatically affects survival and treatment.
- Greater accuracy in pinpointing size, shape and location of abnormalities, which results in fewer follow-up office visits and unneeded biopsies.
- Better detection of multiple breast tumors, which can occur in 15 percent of breast cancer patients.
- More precise images of dense breast tissue.
