Podiatry residency teaching
Teaching is a major focus of the UCSF Health St. Mary's Hospital podiatric residency. Residents work with medical students and residents in other specialties within many of our rotations, increasing their own knowledge of podiatry in the process.
Here are some examples of rotations and groups that residents will help teach:
PGY1
- Emergency department: fourth-year medical students, emergency department residents
- Foot and ankle surgery: second- and third-year podiatric medical students, fourth-year podiatric externs
- General surgery: third-year podiatric medical students
- Internal medicine: fourth-year medical students, medical residents
PGY2
- Foot and ankle surgery: second- and third-year podiatric medical students, fourth-year podiatric externs, PGY1 podiatric surgery residents
PGY3
- Foot and ankle surgery: second- and third-year podiatric medical students, fourth-year podiatric externs, PGY1 and PGY2 podiatric surgery residents
Teaching takes a variety of forms during the residency. These include:
- Being available to answer questions
- Letting students follow a patient with you; reviewing their notes and discussing pertinent topics as they arise; and instructing students during surgery, particularly on suturing
- Creating academic presentations, handouts and lectures on podiatric topics
- Teaching hands-on skills (such as performing arterial blood gas analyses and inserting an IV catheter)
Volunteer
UCSF Health St. Mary's Hospital prides itself on giving back to the community. One way we do this is through free health screenings, including a monthly health fair that's typically held on a Saturday. Podiatry residents are asked to participate in the fair, and patients are always thankful for their help.
More information for prospective residents
Three entry-level positions are available in the UCSF Health St. Mary's Hospital podiatric medicine and surgery residency (PMSR), with an emphasis in reconstructive rearfoot and ankle (RRA) surgery. Residents will spend extensive time at two high-volume county hospitals where they'll have significant exposure to trauma care.
Set in the San Francisco Bay Area, the program offers residents the bonus of easy access to numerous cultural, sports and leisure activities.
